2006 Tohatsu 6hp four stroke; 25" shaft will help keep the prop in the water when motoring in rough water.  Motor starts with one pull and is practically silent at idle.  Purchased online at a significant discount through Tohatsu in Tennessee.

Replaced standard 7.8 x 8" prop with a 8 x 6" pitch prop.  The reverse works MUCH better than my old Johnson 6hp with standard prop.  Thanks to Alan and others on Sailnet Macgregor List for tutoring on prop performance.  First number is the prop rotating diameter (7.8 inches) and second number is the theoretical distance the prop will push the boat forward in one revolution (6 inches).  The smaller pitch prop will not have as much top end speed but will push a heavier load more efficiently without cavitation and delivers better reverse performance.  The Mac's displacement hull speed is only about 6 knots, so top end speed is not an issue.

My reverse performance (2006 & 2008) while sailing the San Juan's, Gulf Islands and SF Bay was dramatically improved.  I can now start and stop with positive control and that was the most important aspect for me.  I have no data to compare speed or mileage.  The new motor runs so quietly that it appears to be achieving cruising speed at lower rpm's.
