| Anchored in a newly created cove (water level down 100 feet) in Lake Oroville in Northern California. The dirt hill was recently under water and will soon be again. Two of the pictures taken while floating on a cockpit cushion. Hard to see, but the kick up rudder was redone in oak; permanent step on starboard transom; lightweight head sail furling. Deck made back when "hospital green" was in vogue. One and a half hours from door to cove...a great way to get away. | ||||

My son, Ben, hollering back at the helmsman to "Knock it off! I'm trying to use the head." Affectionately called "The Bucking Bronco", it can be the best seat in the house when crossing "The Slot" between Sausalito and San Francisco. My favorite place to sail (for the variety and challenge) is SF Bay but my wife prefers calm lake sailing, where she can sit out on the foredeck and play her flute. Actually, we both like both. For those with small boats, it is wise to cross the slot in the morning or evening. Winds funneling through the Gate routinely reach 35 knots. | ||||

At left, friend Mindy models (she's going to kill me) our luxurious and spacious accommodations. Middle, at berth in South Beach Harbor in San Francisco (comments overheard from nearby: "There goes the neighborhood..."). Right, our other boat, a Hobie 16, when we "feel the need for speed". When the whole family gets together for a weekend at the lake, we often use a ski boat, the Hobie and the V222. |

Above left is my wife, Jan and son, Ben with Tomales Bay in background, located just south of Bodega Bay. Andante is anchored (just above Jan's head) in White Gulch with Hog Island in background. Point Reyes National Seashore is home to two herds of elk, a light house, a museum, great hiking and near desolate beaches just one hour north of San Francisco. Above right is Drake's Bay, about 30 miles north of SF. I paddled ashore in my inflatable canoe, "phoned home" to let Jan know I was still breathing and took a hike to Point Reyes Lighthouse for a very interesting tour. This was a four day singlehanded trip, leaving SF Bay on the midnight tide. Anchored overnight in Bolinas Lagoon, entering/exiting through the surf with keel and kickup rudder most of the way up. Upon returning, had to anchor off of South Beach outside the Gate, waiting for the tide, without wind (rare) and low on gas. After being "flushed" into the Bay I was treated to an unforgettable view of a flat calm SF Bay, where every shore light extended its rays along a multi-colored path through the water to my boat. Have never seen such a thing since. With sails hanging limp and long oars at the ready, I floated in between Angel Island and Alcatraz until finally catching some wind for the return sail to Richmond. Below, a view toward the Gate just off Point Bonita light house at the entrance to SF Bay . |

Angel Island is a great destination in SF Bay that we especially enjoy. At left near Fort McDowell, where they actually let you load a replica of a canon and fire it into the bay. Middle, Jan on one of our Dahon folding bicycles. They fit in the v-berth and make it possible to do a lot more things...like bicycling around Angel Island, across the Golden Gate bridge or down Fisherman's Wharf. Right, we nudged up to shore for a picnic breakfast at China Cove on Angel Island. A stern anchor keeps the stern aimed at the waves. |

Some years ago (my son, middle photo, is now 19), I built the first Andante, a flat-bottom 12' skiff that was fashioned after the Skipjacks of old with taff rail, bowsprit, dagger board and trailboards. The rig was a utilitarian Lateen with oak-cored irrigation pipe mast, gaff, boom, and one stay, with a blue tarp as sail (upgraded from the original polyethylene and duct tape). Four months work and $300 in materials gave us a wonderful little boat for learning to sail, taking a 90 mile trip down the Sacramento River, sailing around Angel Island in SF Bay and an overnighter in Tomales Bay, plus many daysails on the lakes around Chico (Almanor, Oroville, Black Butte and Clear Lake). I gave it away and miss it terribly. |

For those that are still awake, take a look at Stan Hankin's Macgregor 26d, the Yumiko Maru.
